"Education Gathering"

Over seventy individuals from the Tulsa community attended the 5th Annual North Tulsa Economic Development Initiative (NTEDi) - “Education Gathering” event on November 7, 2013. If you were unable to attend you missed a dynamic message by Dr. LaQueta Wright who explained the importance of the three B’s: 1) the Book 2) the Buck and B) the Ballot. Dr. LaQueta Wright serves as the Professor of Sociology and Coordinator of the Ethnic and African American/Black Studies Program at Richland College of the Dallas County Community College District in Dallas.

She is a Tulsa native and graduate of McLain High School who has served as the National President of the University of Oklahoma Black Alumni Society from 1998 - 2008, and is a Life Member and former Board of Director for the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education (TABPHE). She is also the recipient of the University of Oklahoma 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award, the SMU Alpha Phi Alpha “Women Who Move Mountains” Award, the OU Human Relations Citation of Service Award, the Southern Methodist University “M” Award, Who’s Who. Dr. Wright’s accolades and accomplishment or numerous.

With her contagious smile, sincere heart, compassion for others and commitment to community-building through service Dr. LaQueta L. Wright serves as advisor, supporter and mentor to over 100 students and professionals. Additionally she serves as an educational consultant to institutions of higher learning throughout the United States.

If you missed the event you missed an awesome opportunity to hear from students about what they believed and valued about the education they were receiving at Tulsa Public Schools. The High school senior student panel member participants consisted of Keiandre Brockman from McLain; Cameron Blakley from Will Rogers College; Tasziaun Lewis from Central; and Tyrance Billingsley from Booker T. Washington. Additional speakers sharing information about the public education where Dr. Keith Ballard, Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Lana Turner-Addison, NTEDi President and TPS School Board member, and Dr. Kim Dyce, Deputy Superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools.
